Birds of Prey
Barn Owl
PreviousNext
The Barn Owl (Tyto Alba) is normally a nocturnal hunter, although as you can see from this photograph they can sometimes be spotted hunting during the day, especially when they have young to feed or during cold winter days. They sometimes hunt birds, but mostly hunt small mammals in particular, short-tailed voles, using sound to detect their prey.
This Barn Owl has just dropped down on a rodent that was moving in the grass. These birds can often be seen hunting over the fields at Thornham on the North Norfolk coast.
